Do you like sugar? I LOVE SUGAR! At least I think I love sugar. My head tells me I love it and it has even in the past told me that I NEEDED it. Seriously sugar has been my drug of choice for most of my life. It is my version of others heroine and the addiction is no joke and I have tried to quit it many times. When a bad day or better yet a bad moment strikes my first inclination is to reach for the biggest and best sugary treat I can find.
My day does not start without coffee and in the past it couldn’t get started without a sugar filled cup of coffee. I probably should have taken stock in coffee creamer. The variety of flavors were so delightful, especially during the holidays, my heart would skip a beat as I doubled up my creamer purchase to enjoy the coffee filled delight.
I am actually proud of myself because when I started with Beachbody’s 21 day fix last year the first thing I did was walk away from my daily dose of sugar. I have not had a cup of coffee with artificial non dairy creamer of any kind since August 20th of 2015. “Hello, my name is Alina and I am a sugar-aholic, I have been sober from sugary coffee’s for 13 months.” I joke, but this isn’t really a joke for me personally because it is a real addiction I have had to walk away from. Now this isn’t to say that I don’t ever have sugar, I do but I try to choose my sugar wisely now and avoid added sugars that are unnecessary.
Over the summer I indulged more than I should have, I decided that I had made so much progress that it was ok to now enjoy almond creamer. It isn’t chemically processed and it is almond milk with just a little added sugar. 4 g/serving to be exact. Oh how it took me back to the sweet creamy place I love. I justified it because it wasnt too high in sugars and it was all natural. Well here is the thing about me; starting my day with just that tiny bit of sugar left me craving more and more and more to the point that I was back to drinking 5 cups of coffee with almond creamer a day as well as reaching for those cookies and candies I had previously lost the craving for. I don’t know what it is about that small amount of sugar in my diet that sends me tail spinning but it does. Lesson re-learned.
In no way shape or form am I an expert on sugar but I am going to share the few things I know about it from all of my years of dieting, nutrition classes, and all of the reading I have done to understand why my body stayed fat for so many years. Sugar! I truly believe it is sugar. I always thought it was fat causing me to be fat. Nope! I have once again proved it to myself, it is sugar. Shall I say it again? Sugar made me fat and if I am not careful it could make me fat again!!
Sugar is essential in its natural form when it is consumed in our fruits and healthy whole foods. It gives us energy and helps our bodies to function at their best. When we eat a bowl of yummy strawberries our body recognises the sugar and immediately gets to work breaking it down into carbohydrates and glycogen and then uses it for sustained energy. God created these amazing bodies we live in to function so perfectly down to every detail and then he gave us all the food sources we would ever need to survive. He gave us plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. He gave us animals to serve as a source of protein and dairy through eggs and milk as well as livestock to consume. (Vegetarians I know may disagree here but not looking to start that discussion, I applaud you all but I admit to liking my meat!) Sadly though our society has advanced to the point that we have taken all of these things and distorted them, chemically processed them, and added man-made components to the point of confusing our bodies. Simply put they stop functioning as they were created to. When you are given somethng from a friend and you appreciate the gift but are not sure what to do with it where does it go? Personally I store things of this nature away in a drawer or closet and forget about it. This is ultimately what our bodies do too. We store it all as fat and find ourselves with extra love handles in places we do not want them. When I take in unnecessary sugar my body spikes and I have a high and then I drop and I drop hard and the only thing that can get me back up is the next dose of sugar. It is a unhealthy cycle I had lived for years but didn’t fully understand it or even realise it until this past year of real healthy living.
Today is day 3 of my current 21 day fix challenge and I am back down a few pounds and I know it is related to getting rid of all that unnecessary sugar. So today ask yourself what may be holding you back? What is the something in your diet that could be keeping you from reaching your goals? I believe each one of us has to figure out what our bodies dislike that may cause us to function less than at our optimum. When you fuel yourself with all good things you will be amazed at the results!
